Skiing

Winter is the time for snow and everything snow-related.

That starts with snow shovelling. Not really one of my great pleasures but it does still give some satisfaction. Better when I have visitors to do the work!

Downhill skiing is my top joy on the snow. Living now in Fieberbrunn, as well as all the Kitzbüheler Alps, the areas further east, Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang and Zell-am-See and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier at Kaprun, are all withing striking distance. And now they are all included on my Kitzbüheler Alpen season ticket.

Actually, this page should really be titled "Snowsports" rather than just "Skiing" but I'm old-fashioned, so I'll stick to the good old name. However, I do enjoy trying out anything on snow.

Langlauf, cross-country skiing on skinny skis, I mostly do with my friend, Judy, or with other friends whom I cannot persuade to try "proper" skiing. I do enjoy langlauf, though, especially on days where you can glide through sunlit forests, very peaceful. Now the local langlauf loipe (track) is only a few hundred metres from my house but I must admit I hardly used it in my first winter here.

Snowboarding is something I have never really mastered. I'm still too nervous and timid. However, I do try to get the board out once or twice every season and slide gently down the slopes, with kids belting past me most of the time (occasionally I overtake a beginner). Maybe I should take more lessons but I doubt I will ever be a brilliant snowboarder.

Snowshoe hiking is something I have taken up here in Fieberbrunn and I enjoyed one or two trips, including climbing to the Hochkogl with Irene (and coming back down in the dark after our refreshments - not sure Irene enjoyed that).
