The walk up to the Wildseeloder Hut is very popular, for it is not that difficult, suitable for most (with some puff) from 8 to 80 (as the photo above shows - that group's Opa was puggling along behind). The last bit up to the hut is a little steeper but even that is not too serious and the path is good. Here are three variations for starting:
- Drive up to the Lärchfilzhochalm and walk on up the track from there. From here the hike to the hut takes 1.5-2 hours. You could walk up to the Lärchfilzhochalm from the valley but that is a long way.
- Take the red cable-car, the Streuböden lift, up from the car park at Lindau (again you could also walk all the way up, probably taking another hour and a half), either to the middle station if you want a longer walk (from there the path is as described below) or right up to the top station on the Lärchfilzkogel. There a track starts behind the lift building and leads down to the Wildalmen and then on to the Wildseeloder. This route should be possible in 1.5 hours (walking from the top of the Lärchfilzkogel).
- Really serious walkers can start in the Pletzergraben and follow either the path up to the middle station of the Streuböden lift or the track past the Zillstatt-Alpe (on maps sometimes: Zielstatt) which comes out a little above that middle station. This route is part of the Fieberbrunner Höhenweg, Fieberbrunn's High Route, number 2 on maps (in some places also numbered with the European route number 711). Both ways then go on past the Gaststätte Wildalpgatterl (on maps sometimes: Wildalmgatterl).
From the Wildalpgatterl there are three alternatives: The direct route, relatively steep, goes under the lift cable and eventually joins the path coming down from the Lärchfilzkogel before going on to the Wildalmen. I haven't done this yet but I estimate around 3-4 hours from the Pletzergraben going this way.
If, after taking refreshments at the Wildalpgatterl, you don't fancy such a steep climb right away, you can take the track that leads over towards the Lärchfilz-hochalm (another watering hole) and from there get onto the track leading up to the Wildalmen, as described above (a further variation is to take the shortcut over by the top station of the Lärchfilzen chairlift to reach the Wildalmen track).
All three direct routes come together for the final climb up to the Wildseeloderhaus at the Wildalm, where refreshments are available if desired.
Going up from the Lärchfilzhochalm there is yet one more possibility, for those looking for a longer walk. Instead of going to the Wildalmen and then up to the Wildseeloder-haus, you can cut off to your left on the route that takes you up to the Reckmoos and then to the Hochhörndler Hütte, as described on its own page. The route then continues over the Blumenpfad (the flower path - route 18) to the Seenieder and then down to the Wildseeloderhaus. This would probably take 2-3 hours longer than the more direct routes. Alternatively, and possibly more easily, you can take the detour by the Seenieder and Blumenweg to the Hochhörndler Hütte on the way back, after visiting the Wildseeloderhaus by the direct routes.
The Wildseeloderhaus, at 1854 metres, is set very attractively beside the Wildsee, a little alpine lake. You can eat and drink there and even stay overnight (the hut belongs to the Austrian Alpine Club but non-members are also welcome). There is a bunk room and also a few double rooms. It is advisable to phone in advance, if you want to stay: 0043 680 1257679. More details (in German) can be seen on the Wildseeloderhaus web site.
